The Behind Closed Doors Study: Making domestic cleaning work visible and promoting its value through research
Dr Nicola Chamamuto, University of Lincoln, 2024
In 2022 I was contacted by Dr Nicola Chamamuto, then a PhD student at the University of Lincoln who was close to completing her thesis on understanding the hidden emotional labour of migrant women doing domestic cleaning work in England. Nicola was planning to create a report from her thesis which would be accessible to advocacy, support and local organisations campaigning for greater dignity and better working conditions for live-out domestic workers. She asked me to create a set of illustrations for the report.
As with all my research illustrations, I spent essential time talking through with Nicola the type of artwork she hoped for and the timeframe involved. Nicola then produced a clear brief and sent me background material from her thesis. I produced six black and white illustrations which have been incorporated into the report. During this period Nicola was awarded her doctorate and worked on the condensed report which was published in early 2024.
