My Brilliant Career? An Investigation

The Project

This graphic essay, in a large scale (4xA2) comic format conforming to the structural conventions of an essay or article, communicates research findings from Gender(s) at Work. It was first exhibited at BALTIC Gateshead as part of the Sociological Review’s conference: Undisciplining: Conversations from the Edges in June 2018. The essay features the research process and three cartoon characters embodying gendered dis/advantage in the HE workplace. The graphic essay was a major undertaking – I had no idea what I was letting myself in for when I decided to create something of this size, from scratch and by hand as a novice. From beginning to end, it took six months.
