Being Between Binary
The Project
collage – ‘a synthesis of shattered fragments’ (Davis, 2008)*
Being Between Binary is a work of visual critical auto-ethnography created for exhibition at the conference Here versus There: Beyond Comparison in Queer and Sexuality Politics held at Maynooth University in June 2019. The piece takes the form of a simple scrapbook; the design combines map and memoir, placing Massey’s concept of power geometry (1991) into dialogue with personal experiences of sexuality and gender. It is structured within a creative cartography of Global North and Global South; lines of longitude and latitude echo norms and scripts which condition ideas and understandings of sexuality and gender.
